Global Compact Nepal (GCN) is the local network of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a voluntary non-binding United Nations pact to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation.
The United Nations Global Compact was launched by late Secretary-General Kofi Annan on July 26, 2000, and is now about 20 years old. Although the first organization to join the United Nations Global Compact from Nepal was Lotus Holdings in 2002, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) endeavours in Nepal had already started in 1997 via the Lotus Holdings network. That same network has now grown into the Global Compact Nepal network, having taken various shapes and forms over the years, most notably the CSR Committee formed at the FNCCI (Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry) in 2003 in collaboration with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as well as the International Labor Organization (ILO), which ended up being the official Local Network launch.
