We are a group of students at the University of British Columbia who work together to design, fabricate and construct a scale model steel bridge every year. Students are able to take their in-class technical knowledge and apply it to a fun and challenging design problem. We welcome students from all year levels as well as from any department. If you are looking to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic team environment, this is the right place for you.

Every year, we participate in the annual Regional and National Steel Bridge Competitions hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as well as the Canadian National Steel Bridge Competition (CNSBC). We work to create a new bridge that will be defined by the competition rules published anew annually. In the 2017 competitions, our bridge spanned a length of 20โ 9โ and carried a total load of 2500lb without significant deflections.

The design and fabrication stages of the project, as well as the actual competitions, are extremely rewarding to the students. During the design process, we offer students the opportunity to apply their technical knowledge in the design and analysis of steel trusses. Students are also taught to use AutoCAD, S-Frame, and SolidWorks - three programs which are given very little exposure and instruction in class. In the fabrication and construction processes, students have the chance to work hands-on and see their project come to life. Attending the competitions allows the students to exchange knowledge with teams from other schools and learn from other outstanding students.
