The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is an elected body that represents 200,000 unionized working men and women in Canada's largest urban centre.
Over the years, the Labour Council has has helped develop the Campaign for Public Education, Public Transit for the Public Good, and the Toronto Waterwatch campaign to defend vital public services in Toronto. It has also developed the “Green Jobs Strategy” for the Canadian Labour Congress -- the first strategy for environmentally friendly employment in North America.
In 2007, the Labour Council played a major role in the successful fight for a $10 Minimum Wage under the leadership of its current president John Cartwright. It has has recently focused on challenging the growth of poverty wages in our economy, particularly through the new $15 and Fairness campaign for a $15/hour minimum wage.
