A philosophy of “amputees helping amputees” has been the hallmark of The War Amps since its creation by amputee veterans in 1918. Since then, our programs have grown from assisting war amputees to all Canadian amputees, including children. Our Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which is unique in the world, offers comprehensive services to child amputees and their families, including financial assistance, advocacy and peer support. We also provide resources for adult amputees, and our historic work for veterans continues to the present day.
The Key Tag Service was established in 1946 to create jobs for amputee veterans returning home from war and to provide Canadians with a valuable key return service. Donations from the public to the Key Tag Service fund our many programs – we do not receive government grants. Since its creation, the Key Tag Service sheltered workshop in Ontario has employed hundreds of people with disabilities, and we continue to employ people with disabilities here and throughout our organization.
