We know that young people are powerful agents of change and experts of their own experience. We partner with them to put their ideas for improving themselves and their communities into action. We focus on ensuring that the voices of young people are heard in the decisions that affect them. We respect their strengths and provide experiences that support their successful transition to adulthood. Our work is grounded in the evidence that meaningful youth engagement and enhanced youth voice leads to better outcomes for young people, their relationships, and the worlds they inhabit.
The Students Commission of Canada was founded in 1991 on a recommendation from young people. We are an independent, charitable, non-governmental organization and we work primarily across Canada to ensure that young people have opportunities to participate meaningfully in organizations, governments and their communities. We use the word "commission" because we were commissioned into being by young people and work with them as staff, co-op students, and volunteers in everything we do.
In the year 2000, we became the lead of The Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement, which networks academics, youth organizations and young people to provide research, evaluation and training focused on improving youth programs and youth engagement in Canada.
Our core activities include: Youth Programming, Capacity Building, and Research and Evaluation.
