First licensed in 1394, The Salters’ Company has its origins in the salt trade of medieval London. Ranked number nine in the order of precedence, it is one of the Great 12 Livery Companies. The Company’s activities today are centred on charitable work and science education activities. The Salters’ Institute is the Company’s flagship charity, which supports science education and additionally, project grants and general donations are made to charities through The Salters’ Charitable Foundation, which also offers support to members of The Salters’ Company, their widows or dependants and other persons at the discretion of the Trustees. Support is also given to the residents of the Company Almshouses in Maidenhead and Watford.
The Salters' Institute, established in 1918, is the Flagship Charity of the Salters' Company. The Salters’ Institute aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences amongst the young and to encourage careers in the teaching of chemistry and in the UK chemical and allied industries. The Institute’s three core activities are Salters' Festivals of Chemistry for 11 to 14 year olds; Salters' Chemistry Camps for those aged 15, in partnership with other scientific institutions, and Curriculum Development, undertaken at The University of York, under the direction of the Salters’ Professor of Science Education, which includes Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology, Salters Advanced Chemistry, Salters Horners Advanced Physics and Twenty First Century Science and the Key Stage 3 project, York Science.
