The Roger Williams Institute Of Liver Studies

The Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies (RW-ILS) is a unique clinical academic partnership between the Foundation for Liver Research, King’s College London and King’s College Hospital that encompasses a multi-disciplinary team focussed on liver research and the improvement of outcomes for patients with liver diseases. The RW-ILS is Europe’s largest comprehensive academic liver centre. It hosts a world-renowned adult and paediatric liver transplant program (approximately 250 cases per year) and has unparalleled expertise in the management of acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure, autoimmune and metabolic liver diseases, hepato-biliary neoplasms, viral hepatitis and paediatric liver diseases. Under the leadership of Director Professor Philip Newsome and Deputy Director Professor Alberto Sanchez-Fueyo, the RW-ILS comprises more than 15 scientific groups with over 100 staff members. The unifying mission of the RW-ILS is to integrate its outstanding discovery science with translational and clinical investigation to ensure that patients with liver diseases benefit from access to the latest innovations in clinical care. Located at King’s Denmark Hill campus, the RW-ILS encompasses a standalone 3 storey Institute with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, additional wet laboratory facilities at the King’s College London James Black Centre, the Alex Mowat Paediatric Research Laboratories at King’s College Hospital, and an extensive footprint accommodating clinical and academic staff at King’s College Hospital. Our Principal Investigators cover the full spectrum of research from discovery science to clinical translation and implementation science. They are open to enquiries from industry for collaboration and approaches from prospective PhD students.
