The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh is a non-profit organisation established in 1457 and Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1687. Today it is the oldest consumer protection group in Scotland and it is believed to be the oldest continuously existing business of any kind in the country. We continue to trade as the Edinburgh Assay Office, promoting continued consumer protection around the Hallmark. Through the work of our charity, The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust we promote and support the education, art and craft of Scotland's gold and silversmithing heritage. Our activity includes Elements: A Festival of Jewellery Silver and Gold, Silver of the Stars, The Millennium Collection at Bute House, Precious Metal Grants for Scottish Art Colleges, Outstanding Student Award and the Creative Learning Resource in partnership with the Edinburgh City Council. In 2017 The Incorporation of Goldsmiths developed our Ethical Making Programme which includes two initiatives: the Ethical Making Resource and the Ethical Making Pledge. These projects are part of the Incorporation’s strategy to promote and support the uptake of ethical making practices in the jewellery and silversmithing trade in Scotland.
