Drawing on her own background as a musician, activist, and educator, Sona Jobarteh launched The Gambia Academy in 2015. What started with 21 young students, selected from over 400 candidates, is fast becoming a model for other education and vocational efforts across Africa.
Here, aspiring young Gambians not only hone their music and thinking skills; they are acquiring the requisite skills to effect positive change at home and abroad.
Currently funded by proceeds from her international touring and album sales, the Academy is now in expansion model. Recently, Sona purchased 50 hectares of land on which a brilliant new campus will take shape. Situated on the southern edge of The Gambia, this will enable us to expand The Academy’s junior enrollment to 140 students and launch a comprehensive vocational training program for those 18 or older.
