The Doris A. Howell Foundation for Women’s Health Research is dedicated to making a long-term, positive impact on women’s health.
To that extent, the organization supports women's health by:
• Awarding unique research scholarships to undergraduate students and graduate nursing students.
• Providing pilot grants to researchers who partner with community organizations to address vital health issues in “at-risk” and underserved women in the San Diego region. Through these scholarships and awards we support research at all three major research universities in San Diego.
• Educating all who care about women by presenting the latest medical research findings through our Luncheon Lecture series, our evening “Health and Happiness” series, and our Speakers Service.
In the past, the results of scientific studies involving only men as participants were often extrapolated to women, even though the physiology of men and women is different. In addition, there was a dearth of research in the area of women's health. Recognizing this, the National Institutes of Health regulations changed in the 1990's to provide for more valid research parameters and equity for women's health studies. Today, there still remains a backlog of women's health research and it is the belief of The Howell Foundation that now is the time to address this backlog.
We know research requires a constant infusion of talent to serve the community and society at large. For this reason, the primary goal of the Howell Foundation is to influence students to pursue careers impacting women's health and to develop financial support that will accelerate solutions to women's health problems.
Through our guiding philosophy of "Keeping the Women We Love Healthy" we serve to make a lasting impact on society and the overall well being of women.
