The Brick Builder is the identity of the Artist Ben Craig, who builds models and experiences with LEGO® bricks
Ben is a life-long fan of LEGO®, and of aviation, and in 2017 he was named as the Artist in Residence for Brisbane Airport, following the likes of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and painter Robert Brownhall.
Having never lost the childhood LEGO® interest, Ben has frequently built for public display. In 2012, he received an award from LEGO® set designers in Billund, Denmark, creating a concept in response to their brief.
In 2013, he received an award for his work at a major Australian LEGO® fan event. His collaborative builds with other fans have also won a number of awards.
In 2012, Ben was a founding member of Sydney’s largest LEGO® fan event, The Sydney Brick Show. The event’s largest attendance has hit 25,000.
Ever with an eye for detail, Ben’s building style is one that reflects the world and stories around him. His key builds have included a two-metre representation of St Pancras Clock Tower (London), Australian landscapes (for example the collaborative Outback project below), various metro scenes, transport icons, famous lighthouses, as well as film and pop-culture.
Outside of LEGO®, Ben’s interest lies in the technical underpinning of the global industry, particularly transport. He also collects scale aircraft, and yes he is one that will select flights based on the particular aircraft and sectors flown.
Since relocating to Queensland in 2016, Ben works in marketing and communications for a Brisbane based not-for-profit. He now lives on the Gold Coast with his wife and two boys.
