The Art Room is a charity that was set up in 2002 to offer art as therapy to children and young people aged 5 to 16 who are facing major challenges in their lives. It uses art to raise their self esteem, self confidence and independence.
Many of the students who attend The Art Room are disengaged from mainstream education, are disruptive or withdrawn. All have been identified as needing special time away from school in a calm environment. Some of the students have learning difficulties or have had an interrupted education; some have recently arrived in this country; others are prime carers within their families or are ‘looked after children’ (children in care).
For all these children The Art Room offers respite from the pressure of mainstream education and a chance to be creative in a safe, relaxed environment.
Starting from a small base in Oxford Spires Academy, a secondary school in East Oxford, The Art Room has grown. There are now nine Art Rooms which help over 500 students each week.
