TERRATONICS is disruptive technology that offers a robust pioneering concrete free foundation system to offsite manufacturers of Modern Methods of Construction systems (MMC’s): such as, Timber Frame, Light Gauge Steel Frame and Structural Insulated Panels Manufacturers. Terratonics will allow these offsite manufacturers to replace expensive environmentally damaging concrete in foundations and subfloors.
The main component of the Terratonics solution is a Terrapod which is a structural pedestal beam carrier which transfers the building’s associated loads to the engineered ground below. The Terrapod is made from an engineering polymer that is extremely tough and has both a high tensile and compression strength.
The Problem with using concrete, is that it’s the most used construction material used in the world, its also responsible for the release of 8% of the worlds man made CO2 emission annually.
To put this in context with natural occurring emissions:
• In 2018 Total man-made CO2 emissions accounted for the release of 37 Billion tonnes of CO2 gas
• Annual CO2 emissions from concretes production account for 3 Billion tonnes of CO2 gas
• Annual Global forest fires release 5% of the worlds CO2 gas which equals 1.85 Billion tonnes
• Annual Global Volcanic actives emissions of CO2 gas was a mere .3 Billion tonnes 123 times less that human activities and 10 times less than concrete production.
Along with polluting the environment concrete production is responsible for consuming 3 Billion m3/tonnes of water every year. Imagine that is the same amount of water that flows over the Niagara Falls in Buffalo for every 350 hours or 14 and half days.
The Environmental Impact of constructing an average house base with a ground floor area of 60m2, using concrete in the foundation & sub floor requires the following materials:
• Ready Mix Concrete & Concrete Blocks 44m3
• Fresh Water Volume 8m3
• Deliveries to site, diesel fuel used 422 litres
