Tennessee Language Center was created as an agency of the State of Tennessee established in 1986 under the name Tennessee Foreign Language Institute (TFLI). It was the only one of its kind in state government throughout the U.S. Today, Tennessee Language Center, under the direction of the Institute for Public Service of the University of Tennessee, is dedicated to responsive service of the public sector, the business community and private citizens in realizing their intercultural communication goals.
Tennessee Language Center offers:
- World language instruction -- both scheduled and customized -- with classes in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and others; English (ESL)
- Professional development and career advancement, including training for teachers of ESL, world language instructors and interpreters
- Translation and interpretation services for global commerce, the legal community, healthcare providers and individuals
- Cultural awareness and diversity programs
