Surgia is a not-for-profit association that provides information, resources and networking opportunities to enhance essential surgical knowledge and skills in students and young doctors. Surgia addresses the lack of surgical education and awareness at the grass-roots by running events in:
- Surgical Skills: Encourages technical skills and dexterity in suturing, chest drainage insertion, knot tying etc.
- Anatomy: Surgically-orientated sessions with tuition from experts.
- Research: Research database for surgeons and students to engage in research, online Journal Club, in-house research and the 2014 research conference 2014.
- Academia: Educational seminars to enhance surgical knowledge.
- Anaesthetics: To enhance collaborations between surgeons and anaesthetists, events will be held for anaesthetic skills and interests.
- Professionalism: Enhancing self-efficacy in finance, investing, leadership and business.
- Engagement: Ensures gender equality throughout Surgia, providing advocacy and the Mentoring Program for keen students.
Surgia has had a number of successes since its inception. In 2012, Surgia won the prestigious ‘Griffith
University Innovation Challenge’ in recognition of Surgia’s vision and outstanding business plan.
Since subsequent incorporation, Surgia has been fulfilling its vision of inspiring the surgical
leaders of tomorrow and enhancing surgical care and access in the community through grassroots
development and innovative action.
