Spoondrift is powered by the dream to make ocean wave observations and visualization widely available to ocean communities, professionals, and enthusiasts.
Over 70% of our planet is covered by oceans, and almost half of us live within 100 kilometers of the coast. Yet, we know less about our oceans than we do about the surface of the moon. Even today, with modern technology and our astounding digitizing capability, basic ocean observations remain difficult, are often prohibitively expensive, and - as a result - are exceedingly rare.
Technology changes the way we do things and has provided us new capabilities to connect to our physical world. Every day we measure and digitize our living space in amazing detail using GPS, cell phones, cameras, and other widely-available sensing technologies. Almost effortless. All the time.
Spoondrift aims to take this incredible digitizing and computing capability to make measurements, modeling, and visualizations more accessible and massively more available. This is our contribution toward improving our capability to understand, predict, and appreciate the water masses that surround us, for research, industry, safety, and recreation.
