SFA is an award-winning, Cairo-based architecture and research practice led by its principal and founder Shahira Fahmy, since 2005. An interdisciplinary space working at the intersection of design and research, pedagogy, and praxis. The office develops projects that transition across scales and mediums, intended to bring inclusivity into the built environment. The studio acts as a laboratory for testing ideas on every scale, from cities to material properties. Our design approach takes physical and social context as primary generators of built form and demonstrates the potential of contemporary buildings to interpret their surrounding landscapes in ways that are at once accessible and sustainable.
SFA has been widely published, most recently:“100 Women: Architects in Practice” book by Monika Parrinder, Naomi House, Tom Ravenscroft and Harriet Harriss, published by the RIBA - Royal Institute of British Architects, 2023.“The Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture, 1960-2015.” by Brown, Lori A. and Karen Burns. Eds, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2024. “Cairo Since 1900: An Architectural Guide” by Mohamed Elshahed, published by AUC press 2020, making Hadid and Fahmy the only two women architects included in this first substantive account and comprehensive archive of the Egyptian Capital’s Modern Architecture since the early twentieth century.
