Senior Services of Alexandria (formerly Senior Citizens Employment & Services) is a full-service community organization with more than 55 years experience dedicated to helping Alexandria's seniors.
In 1968, Alexandria social activists founded the organization to address age discrimination in employment and to support the unique talents of our seniors as a resource for the city and its business leaders. An employment counseling service was developed to address the needs of displaced seniors age 55 and older.
SSA has now developed to include program that address a wide range of needs within Alexandria's senior community. We have a mission, “to foster independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity.” SSA operates the Meals on Wheels delivery program, a fee-free Groceries to Go service, and DOT transportation reservations for the City, presents educational programs through various events, and a monthly speaker series, "Senior Living in Alexandria." SSA has over 140 Senior Ambassador volunteers who connect their communities with vital resources. SSA and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria operate the AniMeals on Wheels program, providing food for pets of low-income seniors. SSA’s Friendly Visitor Program matches volunteers with seniors for weekly visits, enhancing connections to the community, and SSA’s Silver Service Card program provides local seniors with discounts at select local businesses.
An aging population requires the skills, knowledge, and resources of an organization with the leadership, vision, and experience to identify and remedy issues that emerge and to continue to provide services that will always be needed. Senior Services of Alexandria is committed to this service and welcomes those who would help us in our efforts.
