Second Servings is Houston's only perishable food rescue organization. Since 2015, the nonprofit has been building a healthier community by providing access to nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste. Second Servings picks up unsold and unserved food from over 400 food businesses and delivers it promptly and safely, for free, to 140 local nonprofit partners. Second Servings has delivered more than 12 million pounds of food, valued at $82 million, to over 200,000 Houstonians annually.
"Rescuing" food not only helps feed people in need but also prevents food from going to the landfill to decompose and emitting potent methane gas, a significant contributor to climate change.
With nearly 40% of the available food supply ordinarily going to waste while 20% of Houstonians struggle to have enough to eat, food rescue makes much sense. It is a practical, efficient, and essential approach to both pressing issues.
