The South Devon Railway Trust is a registered charity operating the heritage steam railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes in Devon along the stunning valley of the River Dart. It is one of the West Country's favourite tourist destinations. Services run daily from March to October with regular special events, evening dining trains on selected dates and 'Santa-by-Steam' specials in December. The majority of our services are operated by former Great Western Railway steam locomotives. A large proportion of our staff come from an expanding pool of dedicated volunteers.
As well as running passenger trains, we offer whole day 'Drive a Train' experiences, where you can learn to take controls of a Great Western Railway steam locomotive or British Railways diesel. Our superb 1930s dining train is available for hire for wedding receptions, parties or for corporate entertainment.
There are two other companies in the South Devon Railway group. South Devon Railway plc manages our retail and catering operations and South Devon Railway Engineering Ltd undertakes a wide range of specialist railway engineering and boilersmith services for our own home fleet, the preserved and heritage railway sector, main line train operating companies and locomotive operators, including retyring services, locomotive repairs, manufacture and fitting of replacement parts and locomotive overhauls. SDRE is fully accredited by RISAS (Railway Industry Supplier Approval Scheme) and has accreditation under RT2470 for retyring wheels for use on Network Rail.
