Rural Odyssey, a for-profit social venture, handpick naturally and culturally rich villages of India and bring the community together to open up their houses for urban travellers and open the gateway to a mutual learning. While travellers get to learn from the native wisdom of various indigenous communities of India, communities on the other hand also get to learn some skills from the urban community while generating an additional livelihood for themselves .
Rural Odyssey also organise cultural and other tours to some offbeat places across India utilising the existing infrastructure. The idea is to provide travellers an insightful experience of a region through unique travel experiences i.e. making them aware of various social, economic and environmental aspects of the region while they are travelling leisurely.
Ongoing projects of Rural Odyssey:
-> Documenting the Changpas of Kharnak valley in Ladakh. Changes of Kharnak have seen 60-70% of migration for an easy life and access of education for young children. Rural Odyssey intends to document the semi-nomadic lifestyle of Changpas of Kharnak throughout the year and start a school project in the region in 2020.
-> Sustainable Tourism model village, Nonglwai, in West Khasi hills in Meghalaya.
-> Assessing the feasibility of such projects in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, with the support of Udayan Care and World Bank to prevent distress migration.
