Roy Chapman started his working life as an apprentice motor mechanic in a Ford and Citroen dealer in Chalfont St. Peter in 1959. In 1974 Roy and wife Anne founded Roy Chapman Ltd on the London Road in Berkhamsted.
Initially operating as a Peugeot dealership, Roy Chapman Ltd went on to become one of the most successful Peugeot dealers in the country from the late seventies until the Peugeot business was sold in 1994. Out growing its site in Berkhamsted after Peugeot merged with Talbot, the business relocated to Ashley Green. The Austin Rover franchise was then operated from Berkhamsted and a new site in Harpenden and Roy Chapman Ltd twice finished in the top ten for sales achievement in the UK. The Citroen franchise was taken on in the early nineties at the Berkhamsted site and in 1994 the decision was made to concentrate its efforts wholly on one franchise therefore the premises at Ashley Green was leased out. The Citroen marque was an enormous success and coming into the new century we celebrated our sales success by regularly outselling any other franchise in the area.
The business is now a Ford retail dealer, along with operating as a Citroen and Mazda authorised repair centre, and all makes vehicle service centre. The responsibility of running the company is now down to Roy and Anne’s children, Jeremy and Justine. And this year the company will have been serving Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire for 37 years. During those 37 years Roy Chapman Ltd has never lost its focus of being “seldom beaten for value and friendliness” and continues to offer high levels of customer care.
