At the age of 7, Joseph was imprisoned by RUF rebels in Voinjama, Liberia. For the next decade, Joseph watched as his life story paralleled that of his homeland: a quick and seemingly infinite crumbling of structure and foundation. Eight years later Joseph would board a plane from Norway to New York on a full-scholarship to study at Skidmore University. Having graduated and interned at the US Congress, Joseph returns home to Sierra Leone in June 2009 to construct a high school and journey into memories of his childhood. Directors Liat Krawczyk and Anthony Mancilla follow Joseph as he works to educate Sierra Leonean youth and revisits his extraordinary past.
Vigorous and poignant, Retracing Jeneba is an exploration of Joseph Kaifala’s unwavering efforts towards education and Sierra Leoneans eagerness to regain their breath and turn toward a brighter future.
