Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER), which translates into English as Riau Ecosystem Restoration, is a collaborative project that brings together groups from both private and public sectors to restore and conserve ecologically important peat forest areas on Indonesia’s Kampar Peninsula.
Established in 2013 by APRIL Group and located on Sumatra’s eastern coastline, RER comprises 150,693 hectares of forest situated in two areas. 130,095 hectares are located at the heart of a 344,573 hectare forest block on the Kampar Peninsula, while another 20,599 hectares are located on the nearby Padang Island. The restoration area at Kampar Peninsula is around the size of London.
Today, the RER landscape is made up of five concessions operating under 60-year ecosystem restoration licences granted by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and is home to almost 800 species, many of which are rare or endangered.
RER partners with several partners. APRIL Group provides financial commitment, leadership, operational resources and technical expertise. BIDARA works with local communities to help encourage self-reliance and sustainable use of natural resources. And Flora & Fauna International (FFI) is responsible for essential studies related to biodiversity, climate and communities in the Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island.
