Research focuses on soil gases, esp. landfill gas field, laboratory, & modeling research, including an improved process-based, field validated model for site-specific landfill methane emissions [CALMIM].
Prior experience includes the Illinois State Geological Survey Hydrogeology Section; engineering geology consulting in the Chicago Loop; 20+ years at Argonne National Laboratory; and 15+ years as President, Landfills +, Inc., a consultancy focused on technical assistance and applied research related to landfill gas and solid waste including Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) landfill gas projects in developing countries. Honors include the Argonne Exceptional Achievement Award (1992), the Solid Waste Assn of North America (SWANA) Lifetime Achievement Award for Landfill Gas (2005), Lawrence Lecturer (2008), and "Hall of Flame." Also awarded the "Life for Waste" Award by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) at Sardinia 2013. In 2007, she was the coordinating lead author for the chapter on waste management for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 4th Assessment Report Working Group III (Mitigation). The IPCC received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
