The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) is a non-profit trade association which represents 300+ recording businesses and companies registered in Malaysia. RIM members are involved in the production, manufacturing, and distribution of local and international sound, music video and karaoke recordings.
Besides that, RIM is:
(a) the Malaysian National Group of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI);
(b) a Member of the Special Copyright Taskforce set up under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTC);
(c) a Member of the Attorney General’s Chambers’ Copyright Law Revision Committee; and
(d) a Member of the ASEAN Music Industry Association (AMIA).
RIM was formed on 12 December 1978 as the Malaysian Association of Phonogram and Videogram Producers and Distributors (MAVP). Together with its subsidiary company, Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PPM), RIM provides valuable services to its members through activities such as:-
(i) encouraging close ties with the relevant government agencies as well as informing the government regarding matters which arise to enable law reform suited to the current challenges faced by the industry;
(ii) anti-piracy enforcement action, in and out of court;
(iii) establishing close ties for the mutual development and benefit of other industry associations; and
(iv) developing better business conditions, especially in the digital or ‘new media’ environment.
