The mandate of RPA is derived from the functions stipulated in Part II section 7 and Part III section 18 of the Ionizing Radiation protection Act No. 16 of 2005 and its amendments Act No.19 of 2011.
The following are the specific functions of the Radiation Protection Authority as provided for in the Ionising Radiation Protection Act No 16 of 2005 as amended by the Ionising Radiation Protection Act No. 19 of 2011 Part II section 7 and Part III section 18:
Advise the Government on policies, measures and matters relating to ionising radiation;
Implement the policies of the Government related to the protection of the public, workers and the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation;
Establish facilities for the collection and dissemination of scientific and technical information on ionising radiation;
Collect and disseminate information on the work of the Authority through publications, seminars, workshops and print or electronic media;
Liaise with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) or any other regional or international organisation and institution on matters relating to the promotion of the safe use of ionising radiation in Zambia;
Initiate policy formulation and implement the provisions of this Act and, when so required by the Minister or if the Board otherwise thinks it necessary, draw up and submit to the Minister proposals for amending it or regulations to be made under it;
Ensure the protection and safety of the public in the event of an accidental release of harmful ionising radiation or other emergencies;
Respond to, and coordinate responses to radiological incidences and emergencies;
Investigate any alleged breach of the provisions of this Act;
Make recommendations to the Minister on all matters concerning radiation;
The assurance that all activities involving the use of devices or materials capable of producing dangerous amounts of ionising radiation are carried out in such a manner as to avoid dangers to the public or
