Racing to School (reg no.1040590) is a community charity that aims to inspire young minds through the provision of free, interactive and healthy outdoor educational events staged at a variety of racing venues. Operating since 2001, the charity has two main aims: to offer curriculum-enhanced learning in a real-world environment that is accessible to young people of all abilities, and to introduce them to the vibrant sport of horseracing, which has historically struggled to engage a younger audience.
The charity delivers two distinct Programmes, one aimed at improving primary and secondary school learning across communities and regions nationwide, and we also connect young people with an equine interest with a practical insight into the training routes and careers options within the sport.
The charity works with young people with special educational needs and over one third of our output is targeted to engage those from inner city, rural and deprived areas. Our staff has a range of industry backgrounds including former jockeys who have retrained to develop their second careers, and their experience is invaluable as the charity introduces horseracing as an accessible sport to young people.
Racing to School leads the Racing Together partnership, which represents the wide variety of community engagement work undertaken by racing and youth charities, and commercial organisations whose work benefits others.
Thanks to the kind support of its donors, 2019 was a record year for the charity, delivering 372 events across England, Wales and Scotland and engaging over 15,000 young people. In our 20th anniversary year, we are aiming to reach the milestone of our 200,000th beneficiary.
