The Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) is the principal non-government organisation for public health in Australia. We advocate for the health and wellbeing of all Australians, based on illness prevention, social determinants of health and equity principles.
PHAA is a national organisation comprising around 2000 individual members and representing over 40 professional groups concerned with the promotion of health at a population level.
We focus on capacity building, advocacy, and the development of policy to ensure fewer Australians get sick. We champion prevention-focused policies and provide strong support to the Australian Government, the Preventative Health Taskforce, and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in their efforts to develop and strengthen research and action in this area across Australia.
PHAA is a key proponent of a preventive approach for better population health outcomes. Our work is supported by an evidence-base drawn from our members working in public health practice, research, administration and related fields. Members volunteer their time to inform policy, support advocacy, and assist in capacity building within the sector.
PHAA has Branches in every State and Territory and a range of Special Interest Groups. The Branches work with the National Office to provide policy advice, organise seminars and public events, and mentor public health professionals. Our Special Interest Groups provide specific expertise and peer review to assist the National Office in responding to issues and developing policies.
PHAA also produces The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health (ANZJPH); a peer reviewed, multidisciplinary, open access journal covering public health issues.
