Pianos for People provides free access to the transformative power of music to those who need it most – children and families with limited resources, and the organizations that serve them. We do this by cultivating inspiration, education, community and enrichment, at no charge to those we serve.
A piano is more than just a piano – it can be an agent of positive change in a person’s life, opening doors to intellectual and emotional growth. It is well documented that music study improves IQ, verbal memory, literacy, mathematics and visual-spatial processing and importantly in today’s world, it improves empathy. Yet today, music is regularly removed from school curricula. At the same time, playing an instrument – which takes time and discipline – is being replaced in family life with digital gaming, video, social media, and other distractions from the creative arts.
We delivered our first piano in December 2012, and have since delivered nearly 400 free, high-quality, donated pianos. We source and deliver approximately 50 free quality pianos per year. Pianos donated through our program have had a positive impact on literally thousands of people via our recipient families, community groups, churches and underfunded schools.
Pianos for People currently has 200+ students enrolled at our free Cherokee Street and Ferguson piano schools, and a growing number of additional students at outreach locations where we partner with other agencies. We also host free Summer Piano Camps for youth, and throughout the year, we bring people together from our neighborhoods and beyond for events that encompass music education, collaboration, and performance.
