The Pacific Institution of Languages, Arts and Translation (a.k.a. PILAT) is dedicated to training Papua New Guineans for Bible translation, literacy and other language development work. The purpose of PILAT is to glorify God by equipping PNG Christians to work in these areas.
Courses cover topics such as translation skills, understanding your own language (tokples), understanding the Bible, being a good teacher, and developing a translation or literacy program in your community. These courses are based on Bible principles.
PILAT is located at Ukarumpa, near Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Most courses are held at the purpose-built Training Centre which includes fully-equipped classrooms, men’s and women’s dormitories and a dining hall. Course participants benefit from living, eating and studying in modern, well-equipped facilities with wireless internet, surrounded by the beautiful Aiyura Valley.
PILAT is administered by SIL PNG in partnership with the PNG Bible Translation Association (BTA) and other organisations. The staff at PILAT come from all over the world and represent BTA, SIL PNG and other partner organisations. Many teachers have Master’s or PhD degrees in their subject areas, others have many years of experience living and working in Papua New Guinea.
