Orthopaedic International, Inc. saw its humble beginnings back in 1990 with an original focus exclusively on importing and distributing high quality US medical devices to the Philippines.
After only a short time of seeing the poor economic situation in the Philippines, OII’s founder and chairman, Dr. Ramon B. Gustilo, saw the desperate need in Asia for affordable yet high quality medical devices. Thus, in 1992 OII established its own R&D department in Minnesota to develop more affordable orthopedic products to offer to Southeast Asia.
In 1992, as a natural progression to affordability, OII opened its first manufacturing plant in the Philippines to take advantage of the significantly lower overhead and manufacturing costs. The first orthopedic product to be manufactured was the Prime Cemented Hip System, a hip system specifically designed to fit the anatomy of Asian hips.
In 1997, the R&D department was expanded by opening up a Philippine-based team that was tasked with developing products more suited to the needs of Asian patients. In 2005, Dr. Gustilo decided to focus all manufacturing and product development activities in the Philippines.
Looking forward, OII is excited to continue developing new and innovative products that are focused on improving surgical procedures and providing patients with affordable quality implants.
