Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are one of the hapū from the wider Ngāti Whātua iwi. We have approximately 5,000 hapū members throughout Aotearoa and around the world. Located in and around the Tāmaki isthmus, in the largest city in Aotearoa, we hold firm to our history, culture, identity and language.
Occupation of Ngāti Whātua in Tāmaki Makaurau began in the 17th Century under the leadership of our rangatira Tuperiri. As such, every member of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei can trace their whakapapa to Tuperiri and are descended from the 3 hapū: Te Tāōū, Ngāoho and Te Uringutu, collectively referred to as Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
The role of Whai Rawa is to protect and grow the asset base of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to provide a strong financial foundation for the future of our hapū.
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has acquired significant landholdings in the Tāmaki Isthmus (over 160 hectares). While some of these properties are purely cultural in nature (such as Takaparawhau and Pourewa), the vast majority provide the hapū with the opportunity to generate income in the form of rent or through development opportunities.
Whai Rawa is committed to working with our partners in Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa, a long-standing commitment that we have as one of the longest standing business partners of Auckland.
We want to keep you informed about our news, plans and projects, as well as other things of interest to the wider Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei community.
