NDSM Energie is an energy cooperative of companies based on the former NDSM-shipwarf. Once home to the largest shipwharf in Europe, NDSM nowadays harbours a unique mix of (creative) industries - HQs of Dutch retail giant HEMA, VIACOM/MTV and Shipdock’s shipyard neighbour with set designers, restaurants, independent artists and craftsmen as well as some of the most renowned Dutch advertising companies.
Initiated late 2012, NDSM Energie now comprises some 60 out of 400 NDSM-based companies. These companies have collectively embarked on a unique project, as they joined forces in a cooperative with one shared sustainable ambition: making the wharf energy-neutral. In other words: to locally generate the energy that they consume. What started out as a small group of visionaries late 2012 is soon to grow out to become a full service bottom-up utility company and a blueprint for collective sustainable enterprising.
The co-op’s ambitions are literally sky-high as it aims to develop its own wind farm in the near future, of which the first turbine is already permitted by the local government and scheduled for building late 2015. Doing so the companies participating in NDSM Energie would be able to locally power their own businesses.
The co-op’s endeavors go beyond adding a new landmark to the Amsterdam North skyline. As NE’s ventures include the collective buying of guaranteed green energy; smart grids, metering and monitoring; solar energy and the deployment of an innovative e-mobility hub, where cars can be charged with locally produced wind-power.
