Music Crossroads International (MCI) is a non-profit organisation which provide music education, professional training, live performances and promotion of young talents to support the development of the music education sector and the music industry in the culturally rich southern African region. Basically, its mission is to empower young people in Africa through music.
The organisation was initiated in 1995 by Jeunesses Musicales International who was organising annual festivals, international band tours and trainings for many young talents in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe and then resulted in the creation of three permanent educational centers, the Music Crossroads Academies.
The Academies are located in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and were established in 2013. The main objective, through these music schools, is to empower talented young musicians with an affordable and innovative music education program and the necessary tools for a successful musical career. Up to date, the Music Crossroads activities have involved more than 150.000 young musicians and reached more than a million audience in southern Africa and worldwide.
On a yearly basis Music Crossroads organises a Creative Training Campus for the Academies’ students and teachers as well as for external young enthusiasts. The Campus consists in a month of intensive musical training including Music Pedagogy, Melodic Reading, Transcribing, Main Instrument and Ensemble classes. Capacity Building Workshops are also part of the Campus including Instrument Build and Repair, Audio Engineering and Cultural Management.
Music Crossroads International itself is responsible for administration, logistics, communications, reporting, dissemination, disbursements of funding as well as maintaining the overall relationships with partners.
