Morituri eSports was founded in 2016 by Ryan Landry and Blair Wright in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada with the goal of providing a support network for the youth of the area. Our hopes are that through eSports we can provide the leadership skills and career opportunities to youth who do not play traditional sports. Many of Thunder Bay’s youth come from remote northern communities - often without their families. Ryan works in the healthcare field and saw a need for guidance and social support for these youth. Many of them are at-risk of substance abuse and crime without the proper support. The desire to help and build this brand was so strong that Ryan used his finances that he had saved for medical school to invest the starting capital for Morituri eSports. He later decide that he could make a bigger difference by pursuing the brand full time.
We started out running local tournaments to get our name out there and to test the waters for interest in eSports. Local tournaments filled up fast. We received a lot of positive feedback to what we were planning on doing. We did more community engagement events and reached out to local businesses for support. The question we got most of the time is who is going to teach the youth the eSports in and outs? It was at that moment we realized that if we were going to provide the right training and opportunities we would have to enter into the world of professional eSports."
