Mobil emerged from the breakup of Standard Oil, which occurred in 1911. Standard Oil was dissolved by the Sherman Antitrust Act, and one of the 33 companies that resulted from the split was Standard Oil of New York, which eventually became Mobil. In 1955, Standard Oil of New York renamed itself as Socony Mobil Oil Company, and in 1963 it adopted the name Mobil. The signature had finally brand emerged.
In 1998, [Exxon](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/exxon) and Mobil signed a $73.3 billion agreement that would merge the two companies together, and become **[ExxonMobil](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/exxonmobil)**.
