Metroland’s editorial mission is twofold: As a community newspaper dedicated to serving its readers' week-to-week needs for information and insight on the region and its goings-on, Metroland's purpose is to provide such information as comprehensively as possible through news stories, calendar listings and a number of preview/information-oriented columns and features. More broadly, Metroland's mission is to uphold the tradition of alternative journalism by challenging and countering the mainstream media's institutional bias toward the interests of the wealthy and powerful; to give voice to ordinary and/or disenfranchised citizens whose interests often do not coincide with the corporate/government agenda that dominates the mainstream media; to maintain a fiercely independent voice on local, regional and national issues; to provide depth on stories the mainstream media merely gloss over; to enrich readers’ understanding and appreciation of arts and culture; and to challenge readers to constantly rethink their assumptions about their lives, their communities and society as a whole.
