MatsyaPasha is an initiative to tackle the colossal threat of ghost nets in oceans. Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost, or discarded in the sea. These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, delivering a painful death through suffocation or hunger.
MatsyaPasha, funded by US State Department and mentored by CPPR, will create a reliable database on ghost nets in India, and will also deliver technological solutions to tackle the same. We aim to eradicate ghost nets through the introduction of better-quality fishing nets and by spreading awareness about this hidden nightmare.
