Started in Cambodia in 2013 and 2014, in the legendary and historic Chaktomuk Theater in Phnom Penh, the international festival then moved to Myanmar at the end of 2014, with screenings in the unique 1934 building, the Waziya Cinema, and in the impressive open-air venue of Mahabandoola Park in Yangon. In 2021, the festival is suspended following the military coup in Myanmar. It could resume in a new host country in 2024.
Continuing the tradition of the few existing heritage film festivals (in particular Il Cinéma Ritrovato in Bologna and Lumière in Lyon), MEMORY! aims to offer audiences a window on the world, including the sometimes lost or forgotten national treasures of the host country.
Whatever its host country, the festival is always co-organized with an entity from the host country's film industry.
