The group was founded in Germany in the 70s and was initially developed in the German market, however, in the beginning of the 90s, the group started to expand on a European level. Lidl Malta was founded in 2008 with its first outlets in Santa Venera, Luqa and San Gwann. Today, Lidl Malta operates 10 retail units, including Safi, Zejtun, Qormi, Mosta, Sliema, Burmarrad and in the island of Gozo. In a few years Lidl Malta has become one of the most important players in the national retail market.
