The Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust (LRBT) is a charity organization devoted to the prevention of curable blindness and impaired vision in people who live around the poverty line. Although 80% of blindness is curable, most of it due to cataract, and a lack of facilities along with the inability to afford treatment expands the pool of blindness. Over the last 38 years we have been instrumental in reducing the prevalence of blindness from 1.8 % to 0.9 % of the population. However there are still 1.8 million blind people in the country and another 17.9 million have impaired vision, so there is a huge amount to do.
We are now operating 19 Hospitals, 51 Community Eye Care Centers and 5 Outreach Clinics.
During the year ending June’23 we treated 3 million patients in OPD and performed over 298,292 major & minor surgeries free of charge for the poor. That means on average over 10,200 patients visit our OPDs and 1100 surgeries were performed every working day.
LRBT is the major provider of eye care in the country treating 36% of all eye patients, performing 27.4% of eye surgeries and 32% of all Pediatric eye surgeries. We crossed the 54 millionth patient treated milestone in February 2023 and will be reaching the 55 millionth patient milestone in the upcoming year. LRBT impacts and improves the life of more patients than any non-profit organization in the country.
