His grandfather, an electrician, worked on the original lighting for the Empire State Building. His father, an electrician and foreman, led the team that built a major metropolitan college campus. He taught Jim the joy of working with his hands, from replacing the brakes on a vintage Chevy to re-wiring their modest Cape Cod. A first-generation college graduate, Jim studied political science and pre-law, but was drawn into the "family business" and never looked back. His uncle, a veteran architect, introduced him to the world of commercial development via a 72-story Dallas skyscraper.
