The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia (IMCS UL) was established in 1959 as Computing Centre of research character. The founder of the Computing Centre was Prof. E.Āriņš. At present the director is Dr. sc.comp. R.Balodis-Bolužs, and executive director is Ināra Opmane, M.math.
The staff of IMCS UL consists of 200 researchers, assistants, engineers, and software developers. Annual number of scientific publications is 150-160, presentations in international conferences more than 100.
Apart from research, IMCS UL has always been involved also in commercial software development.
IMCS UL is also one of the largest Internet service providers in Latvia (SigmaNet, earlier known as LATNET). Besides that IMCS UL houses the Master's Degree Studies in Computer Science at the University of Latvia.
