The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (LTT) was established in June 1989 with the appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfred Leipertz, formerly at the Ruhr-University Bochum, as Chair Professor. In March 2012 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Will, previously at Bremen University, was appointed as his successor. Research at LTT covers a wide field from the investigation of fundamental processes, e.g. in combustion and transport phenomena, to the development of new devices and the surveillance of technical processes. In many topics the development and application of laser-based optical techniques is a key issue. In all research areas close cooperation links exist with national and international partners in academia and industry, also in the framework of the Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) and the Excellence Cluster Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM) of the university. The various research fields are closely linked to specialised courses in teaching.
