The Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS) is a research institute within the Research and Innovation Center in Information, Communication and Knowledge Technologies "Athena".
"Athena" is the first research center in Greece with a focus exclusively on Information Society. Established in Athens in 2003, it is a research and technology organization supervised by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Lifetime Learning and Religion. IMIS was founded in 2007 with the mission to conduct research in the area of data management and large-scale information systems.
Research at IMIS has a strong collaborative aspect, and ranges from basic to applied research, in the following areas:
- Distributed Information Systems and Web Information Systems, with focus on scalability and efficiency issues.
- Information integration, interoperability of information systems, semantic Web and ontology management.
- Business and Database intelligence systems, with focus on implementation and optimization.
- Management of geographical information, with focus on spatial and spatiotemporal data management techniques.
- Scientific databases and Digital Libraries, with focus on biological / environmental data management, and data preservation and provenance
