Restaurant Hotel Uzwil
Catering by Hotel Uzwil
Hotel Uzwil was built in 1873 and was the first building in Uzwil with a large ballroom, where all public gatherings and evening entertainment took place. The hotel burned down for unexplained reasons on 5 April 1884. According to reports, it was quickly nothing more than “a pile of rubble”. By 1885 Hotel Uzwil had been reconstructed in all its glory on the same site and was to create even more of a stir: The Hotel Uzwil restaurant was the very first restaurant in the canton of St. Gallen to have electric lighting.
At 1:00 a.m. on 22 April 1909, however, the fire alarms sounded once again at Hotel Uzwil. Fire had broken out in the attic of the adjoining ballroom addition and quickly spread throughout the st Gallen hotel.
A short time later the hotel was rebuilt in the form we know today. Some of the architectural elements were adopted from the old hotel, while others were redesigned in a contemporary style. At that time the hotel was unable to get a building permit for a large ballroom, since by then there were already other buildings with large halls. Later on the owners decided to add an addition with one large and one small ballroom, and also took the opportunity to add a terrace.
From 1955 to this day Hotel Uzwil has belonged to the Bühler family from Uzwil. Great efforts have always been made to keep the hotel’s traditions alive, but also to move with the times.
As of today Hotel Uzwil is one of the best hotels in Switzerland, combining the charming idyllic setting of the st. Gallen environments with excellent business facilities, only a few miles away from Zurich. So whether your visit to Switzerland is leisure or business oriented, Hotel Uzwil, close to St. Gallen, is the place to stay.
