Established in 2010, Helping Hoops Inc. is an independent Melbourne Non Profit running free weekly basketball programs for approximately 1,000 disabled and disadvantaged children every year. Our sessions are open to children of all abilities aged 7 to 24. Our programs are not merely about developing basketball skills; they also aim to:
- Build self-esteem
- Develop leadership and discipline
- Teach respect of self, team mates and officials
- Build trust
- Promote social inclusion
- Develop teamwork skills
- Provide exercise and promote an active lifestyle
Children attending our programs most commonly are:
- Refugees or asylum seekers
- Intellectually disabled or have learning difficulties
- From a family who is experiencing ongoing economic difficulties
- Affected by drugs or alcohol
- Victims of domestic violence
- In public housing or foster care
