Hearts of Gold is a New York City-based, grass roots non-profit founded by Deborah Koenigsberger in 1994. Its mission and purpose are to transform the lives of single, homeless mothers and their children, helping them to break the vicious cycle of homelessness.
In its 29+ years of existence, Hearts of Gold has positively impacted more than 35,000 moms and children. It has proven that focused emotional and physical support—paired with educational and occupational training—helps homeless mothers become economically self-sufficient; lead happy, healthy, productive lives; and ultimately breaks this cycle of poverty and homelessness for their families.
The mission of Hearts of Gold is to break the cycle of homelessness among mothers and children in New York City’s shelter system.
Hearts of Gold (HoG) works in partnership with the mothers and children we serve, helping them to effect positive, sustainable change in their lives. Engaging with HoG programs, our moms and kids gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to transition out of the shelter system and become fully independent and productive members of society.
“Reimagining the future of homeless mothers and their children, together.”
