The Global Infrastructure Facility is a G20 initiative established to address the shortage of high quality, bankable sustainable infrastructure projects in emerging markets. Housed at the World Bank, GIF brings together governments, MDBs, developers, financiers, and other stakeholders in mobilizing private capital in infrastructure projects in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). GIF helps EMDEs select, design, structure, and bring to market such projects. With a strong focus on sustainable infrastructure, GIF has achieved great success since its launch in 2014. GIF has a global portfolio with over 120 projects under preparation in 58 countries, spread across the transport, energy, social infrastructure, water & sanitation, and digital development sectors—with a total investment need of $74 billion. Through the GIF’s support, $50 billion of these are expected to be mobilized from private investments. GIF aims to deliver more than 200 sustainable infrastructure projects and mobilize in excess of $150 billion in additional investments between 2021 and 2027.
